Google’s new AR game: Space Invaders!

In honor of the 45th anniversary of the iconic game “SPACE INVADERS”, Google has partnered with game developers TAITO and Unit9 to turn the world into a playground using augmented reality (AR). “SPACE INVADERS: World Defense”, the mobile game that will be available on Android and iOS, invites players from all over the world to come out and defend the Earth.

What will Space Invaders: World Defense be like?

Taito and Google, the company that released the original version of Space Invaders in 1978, introduced a new version of the game that brings the invaders into the real world using augmented reality tricks via your mobile device. Google plans to make this new AR experience a hit. First, the day after Google I/O 2023, the company announced Space Invaders, among many other things.

Then it was announced that it would adapt the game to the real world using 3D data from Google Maps and Google Street View. The game will appear to be played in the real world via a live video stream from a mobile device’s camera. Aliens will be able to fly behind structures and terrain, climb over roofs, and appear to emerge from the sides of buildings.

As in Pokémon Go, players will have access to roam their neighborhoods to discover new space invaders, beat them to earn points, top localized leaderboards, and “share your achievements on social media with an AR selfie that makes players appear.” Space Invaders: World Defense will be compatible with “ARCore powered devices” running Android 11.0+ or ​​iOS 16.0+.

The game is currently available for download in the App Store and Google Play Store in some countries. However, this is still not the case in Turkey. If you remember, we suffered from the same situation when Pokemon Go first came out. As a matter of fact, it is thought that the game will eventually be active for the players in Turkey, albeit late.
