Samsung reaches agreement with Huawei for 5G license
The company announced a cross-licensing agreement with Oppo that includes standard core patents related to cellular connectivity, including 5G. Adler Feng, Oppo’s Chief Intellectual Property Officer, said, “We are very pleased to enter into a patent cross-licensing agreement with Huawei. This clearly demonstrates that the two companies recognize and greatly respect the value of each other’s intellectual property. This is a profit. As always, we will advocate for the establishment of a sustainable, healthy intellectual property ecosystem where intellectual property licenses can be resolved through friendly negotiations and where the patent value of each company is highly respected.”
It was announced that the agreement with Oppo includes patents related to 5G, Wi-Fi and audio-video codecs. However, Huawei also announced that it has licensed some important 5G technologies to Samsung. Samsung was criticized for the 5G technologies it provided for the Google Tensor chipset. With the Huawei agreement, it is stated that the company will improve 5G technologies.
According to a published report, Huawei has licensed more than 20 companies over the past few years. The report details that from 2019 to 2021, Huawei earned $1.3 billion from license fees.
