Netflix wants to prevent password sharing
Netflix states that nearly 100 million people use the platform using passwords they get from friends or family members. Taking action on this, the company plans to take drastic measures against password sharing in hopes of encouraging new accounts to be created from 2023.
The famous TV series and movie platform has been trying various ways to prevent users from sharing passwords for a while. In this process, many options are focused on, including ‘paying for the amount of watching’ for the content. Thus, Netflix envisages that subscribers avoid paying the extra fee that will be created by the people with whom they share passwords. However, this system is avoided for now on the grounds that it will make the interface of the application more complex.

There are clear statements about password sharing in the Help Center of the platform’s official website. Accordingly, the company says accounts can only be shared by cohabitants and will enforce rules by monitoring users’ IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity.
Netflix hopes to make the transition easier for new subscribers by offering a lower-cost, ad-supported tier. There is also a new “Transfer Profile to New Account” feature that saves viewing history and personalized information for a smoother experience.
