Christian Lindner (FDP) continues to show toughness towards Russia. In an interview with the Handelsblatt, the Federal Minister of Finance announced further sanctions. “We have to take much stronger action against Putin’s supporters: oligarchs who send their children to English private schools, have villas on the Côte d’Azur and shop on Kurfürstendamm,” said Lindner. Their assets and capital flows would have to be “identified and drained”. “Anyone who benefits from the Putin system should no longer be able to have a good time in Europe.”
The FDP leader also defended the decision to anchor a special fund of 100 billion euros for Germany’s armament in the Basic Law. “The strengthening of the Bundeswehr serves as a deterrent. Germany must meet its responsibilities in Europe and NATO,” said Lindner. Germany “can no longer cower and collect a peace dividend,” said the minister. “The war in Ukraine is a wake-up call to end the neglect of the Bundeswehr now.”
