Frankfurt The great desire to travel in summer brought the Tui tourism group a profit for the first time after the corona crisis. Revenue for the 2022 financial year, which ended in September, was almost four times higher than the previous year at 16.55 billion euros, as travel restrictions during the pandemic hampered the package tour and cruise business.

The adjusted operating profit amounted to 409 million euros after a loss of two billion euros, as Tui announced on Wednesday. The balance sheet was saved by the seasonally strongest final quarter from July to September with a pre-tax profit of around one billion euros. At 7.6 million, the number of guests reached 93 percent of the pre-crisis level of 2019.

“Tourism remains a long-term and attractive growth sector,” explained Tui boss Sebastian Ebel. The formula for profitable growth for the world’s largest travel group is: “New products, additional customers, more market share.”

“We also expect a solid and good year 2023, but we are very aware of the external market factors,” added Ebel. In the outlook, Tui takes into account the effects of the Ukraine war and the corona pandemic, inflation and high energy prices, as well as exchange rate fluctuations.
