Will the blackout come in winter?

Dusseldorf “There is a risk of a blackout.” With this statement, the Association of Towns and Municipalities recently caused an uproar. As for the power grid, it’s not the only warning. The federal government’s stress test speaks of a “tense situation”. Hourly critical situations could not be completely ruled out this winter, it says.

Are the lights going out in Germany soon? What are transmission system operators doing to avoid a widespread power failure? And will we be left in the dark in the future when everyone is driving electric cars? Handelsblatt editor Michael Scheppe investigated these questions in the current episode of the Handelsblatt Green & Energy podcast.

He spoke to Christoph Maurer, Managing Director of the consulting firm Consentec, which specializes in energy, and to Stefan Kapferer, head of the transmission system operator 50Hertz.
