Efficiency-oriented transformation in public buildings begins!

Türkiye attaches great importance to energy efficiency, with a target of 30 percent energy saving in public buildings by 2030. The 2030 Energy Efficiency Strategy and the 2024-2030 2nd National Energy Efficiency Action Plan, launched this year by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, form the basis of this target. The plan also includes the conversion of 1.2 million street lights to LED lamps.

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar states that energy efficiency is one of Turkey’s priority agenda items. The Ministry produces environmentally friendly policies to ensure supply security in energy, reduce foreign dependency and achieve the 2053 net zero emission target.

Energy efficiency forms an important part of these policies. The Ministry has developed an energy efficiency strategy without reducing the quality of the services it provides and without negatively affecting social welfare. In line with this strategy, it is aimed to reduce energy consumption by 16 percent and reduce emissions by 100 million tons by 2030.

Public Sector Savings and Efficiency Package was announced. Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Şimşek discussed public regulations.

Public buildings and street lighting have an important place in the strategy and action plan. The Ministry has set a 15 percent savings target for public buildings by 2023, and in line with this target, it has achieved annual savings of 1.1 billion lira in the energy bills of public buildings. As of 2024, the savings target has been increased to 30 percent.

A comprehensive LED conversion program has also been initiated in the field of street lighting. It is aimed to install 1.2 million LED fixtures in general lighting by 2030. Within the scope of this program, work will be done in coordination with electricity distribution companies and local governments.

Minister Bayraktar stated that they will support new investments in the field of energy efficiency and are actively working with relevant ministries to achieve the 2030 targets.

This investment by Turkey in energy efficiency will provide significant benefits both economically and environmentally. Reducing energy consumption will contribute to reducing the current account deficit by reducing energy imports. At the same time, reducing greenhouse gas emissions will be an important step in the fight against climate change.
