Bangkok, Berlin Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) is counting on India to make the German economy more independent of China. According to his ministry, during his trip to the most populous country in the world, which begins on Wednesday, he intends to expand and deepen his partnership with India. India is an “important partner for the diversification of the German economy”.

But despite the declared will of Western politicians to work more closely with India, the country with a population of 1.4 billion has considerable problems positioning itself as an alternative to China. Volker Treier, Head of Foreign Trade at the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DIHK), agrees: “Of course, India has great potential. But to expect that India could replace China as Europe’s economic partner within a few years would be exaggerated.”
