Berlin Five euros rent per square meter per month for an apartment in Berlin, Hamburg or Leipzig? It really is. The average net cold rent for housing cooperatives is 5.80 euros. Because these are not trimmed for return and profit. A dream for every tenant – and for some it even comes true.
Cooperatives create housing for people with low and middle incomes. That’s the idea. Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch founded the first cooperative in 1849 in Delitzsch, Saxony.
Today, alongside municipal companies, cooperatives have the largest stock of apartments at low rents: 2.2 million apartments are owned by around 2,000 cooperatives, or to be precise, the five million members of the same. And there are more and more.
