Spahn secures Covid drug Lagevrio – first delivery in December

Berlin The Federal Ministry of Health has signed a supply contract for the Covid drug Lagevrio with the US pharmaceutical company Merck & Co. As the ministry announced to the Handelsblatt, Germany will receive 80,000 units of the drug with the active ingredient molnupiravir in the coming months. The first deliveries are planned for December.

The approval by the European Medicines Agency (Ema) is still pending. However, the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) was able to “issue a national permit based on the data submitted, so that the product can be made available before approval,” said the managing Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) to the Handelsblatt. “In addition to vaccines, our aim is to secure promising drugs against Covid-19 for Germany at an early stage.”

Other countries are also relying on Covid drugs in the fight against the pandemic. The US government secured a total of 3.1 million units of Lagevrio for 2.2 billion dollars in several steps.
