Berlin Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has become involved in the budget dispute of the traffic light coalition. On Monday evening, Scholz, Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck (Greens) and Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) met for a confidential three-way talk, the Handelsblatt learned from government circles.

In addition to other current topics, the conversation is said to have been about the previous dispute between Habeck and Lindner about the 2024 federal budget.

Habeck and Lindner had written unusual letters to each other in the past week. Habeck had written a letter to Lindner in which he informed the Minister of Finance that he and his Green cabinet colleagues would “not accept” the key figures of the budget. Lindner should stop making “unilateral preliminary decisions”.

In his reply to Habeck, Lindner replied that the news that the green ministries no longer accept the key figures for the 2024 federal budget “surprised him”. It is the task of the Federal Ministry of Finance to prioritize when preparing the budget: “Orderly budget deliberations would otherwise be impossible.”
