Andrzej Sapkowski, the famous author of The Witcher novels, shared his perspective on the various adaptations of his works, focusing specifically on Netflix’s TV series. In his speech at Vienna Comic Con, Sapkowski expressed his unique experience as a writer watching visual adaptations of his works.

Sapkowski emphasized that as a writer, his creative process revolves only around words, not images.
“The only raw materials I use while working are letters. I do not describe the pictures. I don’t see any pictures. I only use letters because I know my reader will only see the letters in the book, not the pictures. So with the letters I have to make the reader imagine the picture, not the other way around… so each [görsel] adaptation is strange to me,” Sapkowski explained.

The author admitted that he looked at other people’s interpretations of The Witcher and found it interesting to see how they visualized his own literary world. Sometimes he welcomes these comments and thinks they are sympathetic to his work. However, without providing further details, he implicitly stated that there were cases where this was not the case.
When the conversation turned to the Netflix series, Sapkowski praised the set but explained that despite her visit, the streaming service ignored her feedback. “Maybe I gave them some ideas, but they never listened to me,” Sapkowski said, and the laughter and half-hearted dismissal that followed shows that he wasn’t too worried that Netflix didn’t take his views into account.
Considering that Henry Cavill recently left The Witcher series, the author’s comments become even more interesting. Although Cavill has not publicly stated the reasons behind his departure, rumors suggest his dissatisfaction with Netflix’s deviation from the literary source material.
