Professor Florian Feltes on bad and good bosses

Florian Feltes

“The bottom line is that you have a general interest in people.”

Dusseldorf Almost everyone has something to say about bad managers. They are too dominant or too reserved, hyperactive or lazy, sociopaths or wimps. The question of what makes a good manager is much more difficult to answer for many.

Florian Feltes, Professor of Digital Leadership at XU University, a private university of applied sciences in Potsdam, approached these questions together with colleagues in a study last year. He also advises companies and helps them identify narcissists.

More on the subject:

In the Handelsblatt podcast Rethink Work he says about good managers: “The crucial thing is that you have a general interest in people.” Anyone who does not like dealing with people should not become a manager but strive for a specialist career.

In his work, Feltes has amassed many insights into narcissistic bosses. He says: “The more narcissistic, the higher it goes.” But where is the line between narcissism and healthy self-confidence? When is a work environment toxic? And what can employers do if they discover narcissistic personalities in them? Feltes tells all this in the new episode of Rethink Work – the podcast about people, the new world of work and leadership.
