Greece is making room for new F-35s!

You may remember the “Turkey-United States F-35 crisis” headlines that have been on the agenda in recent months. At the end of the day, Greece benefited from this crisis and F-35 orders were approved. Order confirmation for F-16 Block 70 has arrived in Turkey. Greece, which is expected to receive the planes in 2027, today made a decision on a radical change in the fleet. Here are the details…

In the past months, we have often talked about Türkiye-United States and the endless F-35 talks. Almost every day, new information about the F-35 emerged, completely independent of the previous day. However, at the end of the day, while F-35 orders were approved for Greece, a rejection decision was made for Turkey.

America then sold 40 F-16 Block 70s, Block 70 modernization kits, a large amount of ammunition and turbofan engines, which are estimated to be used in defense industry projects such as MMU KAAN, in return for the money paid to Turkey. As it is known, F-16 Block 70 is a very capable aircraft.

In addition, when looking at the contents of the package purchased from America, it should be noted that there are many new products for the Turkish Air Force fleet. However, looking at the Aegean skies, Greece may have the right to fly its own F-35s. At this point, it will make its show with the National Combat Aircraft KAAN in Turkey.

According to new news from Greece, we can say that there is a kind of cleaning in the Greek Air Force fleet. The Greek Air Force has old aircraft such as F-4, F-16 Block 30, Mirage 2000. These aircraft, which were once in the Turkish Air Force fleet, were removed from the fleet in sections over time, and even though there are some actively flying in the fleet, this process still continues.

Greece has a large fleet, especially of F-4s. In addition, there are other aircraft types mentioned. Regarding the issue, Greek Defense Minister Dendias said:

“We have many types of aircraft. F-4; F-16 Block 30, 50, 70; Mirage 2000-5 is one of the aircraft in our fleet. However, we must now fully modernize our fleet. For this reason, our F-4, F-16 Block 30 and Miage 2000 aircraft will be sold. “The aircraft in question have lost value, but they are still quite capable and will find buyers.”

We can say that Dendias, who made the aforementioned statement, actually wants to make room for the new F-35s. As for the F-4, the first thing to be overlooked in these sales processes, aviation enthusiasts regretfully report that the number of fleets that will use it is decreasing.
