Munich The transformation of the more than 170-year-old family company Giesecke + Devrient (G+D) has a face: Ralf Wintergerst. Since taking office in 2016, the business graduate has managed to do business with tech giants like Apple on a large scale. “Our digital sales have more than doubled in the last six years, to 25 percent of revenues. This business will continue to grow disproportionately,” Wintergerst said in an interview with the Handelsblatt.

Founded in 1852, the company with 12,600 employees is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of banknotes and technology for both cash management and electronic payment methods. According to the company, Munich customers include 150 central banks.

“Cash, passports, ID cards and debit cards will not disappear and will continue to make up an important part of our sales,” says Wintergerst. G+D also supplies the smartphone giants Apple and Samsung with virtual SIM cards.
