Germany could shape future megatrends

Dusseldorf For many years, technology experts feared that Germany could fall behind when it came to biotech innovations. That has changed radically with the success of the Mainz-based biotechnology company Biontech, says Rafael Laguna de la Vera, head of the Federal Agency for Leap Innovation (Sprind), in the podcast Handelsblatt Disrupt.

He even believes that vaccine development was just the beginning: the example shows how strong Germany’s science is. “Our country has the potential to play a central role in biotechnology in the future.”

What innovations are driving this process? And what technologies will we use to protect the climate, generate energy and build microchips in the future?

For Laguna de la Vera, one thing is certain: Germany has the potential to decisively shape the megatrends of the future. But for this to happen, bureaucracy would have to be reduced and the networking between research, investments and entrepreneurship strengthened. When it comes to innovations, Germany needs a new approach.
