Flood leaves 29 billion euros in damage – domestic news

At least 184 people lost their lives in the flood of the century in July, and countless their belongings. To this day, the people in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate suffer from the consequences of the flood.

It is now clear how high the damage is: 29.2 billion euros!

The federal government is said to have reported this insane amount to the EU Commission. This was reported by the newspapers of the Funke media group, citing government information. The sum is part of a submitted application from Germany for financial aid from the EU Soli Fund for support after natural disasters.

According to the report, it is a record. The amount of damage is several times higher than in the flood disasters in 2002 and 2013. A little more than half is accounted for by Rhineland-Palatinate and, above all, by the Ahr valley, more than 40 percent on North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria and Saxony would be added.

In addition to Germany, the countries also affected by the floods, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Austria, are to apply for aid from the EU. Problem: So far, the soli fund has only had an annual volume of just under 1.3 billion euros.
