Fear of blackout: is there a risk of a complete power failure?

Dusseldorf For this year’s winter, cities, municipalities and grid operators are preparing for the fact that electricity may not be available for some time. A blackout, i.e. a widespread power failure throughout Germany, is now a frightening scenario for many.

But how likely is it that it really comes to that? “I think a blackout in Germany is very unlikely,” says Frank Reyer, head of system management at the transmission system operator Amprion. However, the situation is always tense.

Fear of a blackout: How realistic is a widespread power failure?

The energy supply also depends on the weather. “A quiet first half of winter would greatly promote gas generation,” says energy and meteorology expert Klaas Dozeman from the analysis company Brainchild Commodity Intelligence. In the event of a mild winter, there would not be enough wind power to sufficiently relieve the gas power plants.

Also: On Wednesday, the Federal Cabinet approved the necessary amendment to the Atomic Energy Act in order to get the continued operation of three nuclear reactors on the way. Does the extended term mean a relief for the supply?
