Beirut Former Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn, who fled Japan, has sued the carmaker for more than a billion dollars. According to a copy of the lawsuit seen by Reuters, it was filed with Lebanese prosecutors on May 18.

The lawsuit alleges Nissan, along with two other companies and 12 named individuals, with crimes such as defamation, slander or falsification of evidence.

A comment from Nissan was initially not available. The former car boss was arrested in Tokyo in November 2018. After months of investigations, it came out that Ghosn stole company funds for private purposes and underestimated his income for years.

The Lebanese, French and Brazilian citizen was head of the car companies Nissan and Renault for two decades.

The 69-year-old Ghosn was released from prison in April 2019 under strict conditions and on bail. He then managed a spectacular escape to Lebanon in a box on a private jet.

Ghosn has repeatedly denied the allegations against him in Japan, accusing the French authorities of inciting judicial incitement. He sees himself as a victim of a conspiracy to prevent closer ties between Nissan and Renault. Lebanon does not extradite its citizens.
