Europe is not prepared for retaliation from Russia

Düsseldorf, Brussels, Berlin First Poland and Bulgaria, then Finland, now the Netherlands and Denmark: The Russian energy company Gazprom is gradually stopping its gas deliveries to EU countries. In Europe, this is fueling concern about a complete halt to deliveries, which would have serious economic consequences. Preparations for emergencies are underway, but they are far from over.

Security of supply was one of the dominant issues at the EU summit in Brussels on Monday and Tuesday. “Preparation for major supply disruptions and the resilience of the EU gas market should be improved,” the heads of state and government clarified in their joint statement.

The EU Commission is also calling for quick action: “In view of the lack of reliability of Russian energy supplies, precautions are urgently needed,” says the Repower EU strategy published two weeks ago.
