“Europe is currently not a good place to invest in the solar industry”

Dusseldorf As CEO of Meyer Burger, Gunter Erfurt has a unique selling proposition in Europe: the Swiss solar cell manufacturer is the only remaining company in the industry that still maintains significant production capacities in Europe.

The question at the moment is whether this will remain the case. Because from Erfurt’s point of view, the EU is in danger of losing the location competition with countries such as the USA, China and India. “Europe is currently not a good place to invest in the solar industry,” the manager told Handelsblatt Today. He calls for more support for the economy – in the form of subsidies, such as those paid under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) in the USA.

A letter that Erfurt wrote to Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) on this subject has so far gone unanswered. “We’re mostly ignored there, I’ll just put it bluntly,” summarizes the Meyer Burger boss. “They don’t want to talk to us there.”
