Elections in Turkey – new government, new problems?

Istanbul This Sunday will decide whether Turkey’s long-term president Recep Tayyip Erdogan will be voted out of office or whether he will be allowed to continue in power. Some polls see his challenger, Kemal Kilicdaroglu from the Republican People’s Party CHP, in some cases well ahead of the incumbent.

A devastating series of earthquakes on February 6 of this year has not only caused human suffering. The tremors also had an impact on politics in the country: Erdogan twice had to apologize publicly for poor crisis management.

The elections in Turkey have an impact far beyond the country’s borders. Because the country plays a role in almost every geopolitical conflict. Turkey has also gained economic influence. “Given the opposing ideologies between the government and the opposition, the result is likely to have far-reaching consequences for the Turkish economy, monetary policy, geopolitics and the financial markets,” concludes Deutsche Bank in an analysis.
