Russia responded to the attack on the prestigious Crimean Bridge on Saturday morning with the targeted destruction of residential buildings in the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhia. Twelve people were killed in Russian rocket attacks and around 50 were injured, some seriously.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously appointed General Sergey Surovikin as the new commander in the Ukraine war. The new commander has been known since the wars in Chechnya and Syria for his relentless warfare using missiles against civilian targets such as hospitals and housing complexes.

He has been called “General Armageddon” in the Russian media since the almost complete destruction of the Chechen capital Grozny and the Syrian metropolis Aleppo. The 55-year-old army general’s appointment comes just hours after an explosion destroyed parts of the bridge to Crimea, which Putin himself inaugurated while driving a truck in 2018.
