The Competition Authority announced that it has opened an investigation into used car sales companies operating in our country.
There are several reasons for the increasing prices in the automobile market. If we look at Turkey in particular, rising inflation, the difference in the dollar rate and taxes on automobiles are at the top of this situation.
However, if we look at the world, there are also problems affecting all countries such as the problem of raw material production due to the Russia-Ukraine war, the pandemic and disruptions in the supply chain, and the chip production crisis and global inflation due to the factories’ inability to keep up with the orders.
Of course, in addition to this, there are also galleries that are opportunistic because they know that the prices of cars will increase gradually. For example, new car dealerships do not sell cars at the normal turnkey price with a campaign, not to the customer by issuing invoices as if they had sold the cars to the dealership.
Instead, it puts the same vehicle up for sale in its own galleries by adding the amount of hike it expects to come in 2-3 months. This situation causes the prices to rise rapidly and the second-hand market to become active, even though the manufacturer has not made a hike yet.
After the second-hand sales ban to be introduced, such opportunism will not be possible. Because if the gallery buys the vehicle, it will have to wait at least 6 months. In other words, it will not be able to offer it directly to the market at a high price. Of course, if they prefer to wait because they will be able to do it after 6 months, this may make it even more difficult to find a vehicle in stock.
Of course, the entire industry cannot be held responsible for the mistakes made in this profession. In addition, considering that a limited number of cars are currently arriving in our country, this arrangement, which is said to be applied temporarily, may not work in the long run anyway.
Because although some opportunists periodically disrupt the balance of the market, the main reason for the gradual increase in prices and the lack of cars in stock is the problems we have mentioned above, both in our country and in the world.
