A 12 thousand year old grave was discovered in Kahramanmaraş

As a result of the excavations carried out in Direkli Cave in Kahramanmaraş, a tomb dating back approximately 12 thousand years was found. The head of the excavations and Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University Archeology Department faculty member Assoc. Dr. Cevdet Merih Erek stated that this year’s excavations were carried out with a more limited team following the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquake on February 6.

This tomb discovered in Kahramanmaraş was the 3rd tomb unearthed in the city.

Stating that the third grave was found in the excavations that have been continuing in the region since 2007, Erek reminded that the first grave was discovered in 2009, and the second grave containing the skeleton was discovered in 2019.

Emphasizing that there was a skeleton in only one of the graves, the others were empty, Erek added:

“We carried out our excavations this year in the northern plan squares. We follow a planimetric method in our excavations. The finds are left where they were found, their coordinates are taken and recorded in three dimensions on the computer. We think that one of the dates of these three graves we found in Direkli Cave is 8 thousand 801, and the bottom one is approximately between 12 thousand 100 and 12 thousand 200. Last we foundFame Its history dates back to approximately 12 thousand years ago. “This period represents a period when village life did not yet exist and the people in Direkli Cave lived here seasonally.”
