Berlin Philip D*. could not have dreamed of just a few years ago. As a young career changer in computer animation and later in the same function at the ringtone company Jamba, he earned a lot of money. When he meets his future wife Regina, he is the doer and she is the newcomer. “In the beginning I paid the rent,” says the now 52-year-old. “Then never again.”

When there are no lucrative jobs and their daughter is born in 2013, the couple decides to change roles. As a project manager at a social agency, Regina brings home an annual gross salary of around 45,000 euros. At first, Philip worked.

With Corona, he then took over the entire household and homeschooling. Spouse splitting is financially advantageous for a single-earner household. “Self-esteem is another thing,” says Philip.
