Why the debt brake will continue to be suspended

When Paolo Gentiloni presents the EU Commission’s new growth forecast on Monday, the EU Economic Commissioner will not only present a few new economic figures, but also the course for a delicate financial policy decision. Gentiloni will explain how much worse the economic situation in Europe is due to the Ukraine war.

And that makes it increasingly likely that EU debt rules will also be suspended in 2023. According to Handelsblatt information, government representatives and EU officials in Berlin and Brussels are now firmly expecting such a decision. The Commission intends to officially announce them by May 25 at the latest.

The Stability Pact has been suspended for three years due to the pandemic. Actually, the debt rules should come into force again at the beginning of 2023. Now, because of the Ukraine war, everything is heading towards another suspension. And that could have consequences beyond 2023.
