Historical myths not only connect past and present, they also serve to legitimize future politics – especially when it comes to overcoming crises, to major joint efforts. Former Development Minister Gerd Müller (CSU), for example, vehemently called for a “Marshall Plan with Africa” to create 20 million new jobs there every year. EU Council President Charles Michel and Chancellor Olaf Scholz have promised Ukraine a “European Marshall Plan” for the post-war period in order to rebuild the country devastated by Russian troops.

In Western Europe, the myth of the European Recovery Program (ERP) launched by the USA after the Second World War, popularly known as the Marshall Plan, is unbroken – especially in Germany.
