Why Denmark is sticking to the opening despite the dramatic increase in corona numbers

Despite the increasing number of infections, Denmark is not heading for a new lockdown.

Berlin September 10, 2021 marked a milestone in the pandemic for Danes: The country said goodbye to the last Corona requirements, also because of the very high vaccination rate in the country. It is one of the highest in the world. “Corona under control, now we can reap the fruits of our hard work,” said Health Minister Magnus Heunicke at the time.

The number of new infections had been very low over the summer and it stayed that way until autumn. In the last week of September, the seven-day incidence in Germany’s northernmost neighbor, with around 5.8 million people, was still well below 50.

Since the beginning of October, however, the infection rate has also developed very dynamically in Denmark. Some experts urge caution and advocate that the government of the Social Democratic Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen should reintroduce some measures.
