Dusseldorf The price of electricity fell to an all-time low last Sunday. At 2 p.m. on the European exchange Epex Spot, one megawatt hour cost minus 500 euros. Theoretically, consumers could earn 500 euros if they used one megawatt hour of electricity.

In fact, some individuals managed to make money. The real estate developer Sascha Grimm wrote on the LinkedIn platform: “I earned 13 euros today because I fully charged the cars.” The comment can be found under a post by Merlin Lauenburg, managing director of the electricity provider Tibber.

Utilities like Tibber charge their customers non-predetermined prices per megawatt hour. With so-called dynamic tariffs, consumers sometimes pay more, sometimes less – depending on how much the electricity currently costs on the exchange. If the exchange prices are very negative, they even get money if they consume energy.
