Dusseldorf The price of electricity fell to an all-time low last Sunday. On the Epex Spot, one megawatt hour at 2 p.m. cost minus 500 euros. “This corresponds to the specified price limit,” said a spokeswoman for the European electricity exchange. All exchanges that have joined together to form a European electricity market have agreed that the price must not fall any lower.
Such negative prices occur when the supply of electricity exceeds demand. Then there is more than enough energy on the market. In order not to overload the grids, an incentive is created to consume electricity.
End customers in certain tariffs can then earn money if they specifically consume electricity. On Sunday, theoretically 500 euros per megawatt hour or 50 cents per kilowatt hour. However, this is only possible in certain cases.
