London The lobbying of the agricultural industry was successful: there will also be exceptions to the EU environmental standards for German farmers. Rules on fallow land and crop rotation will be suspended in the coming year to allow farmers to use more land to grow crops without forfeiting environmental premiums.

Federal Minister of Agriculture Cem Özdemir (Greens) wants to make a “contribution to easing the global supply situation”. The World Trade and Food Organizations (WTO and FAO) and the OECD had again warned that many poorer countries were threatened with a food crisis in view of the high world market prices.

In Germany we know the problem in the form of food prices, which have risen drastically since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. However, the prices have clearly moved away from their peak values ​​between February and May.
