What pensioners with wrong tax assessments need to know

Frankfurt For two years, seniors with mini-pensions have been entitled to a basic pension supplement. Due to long discussions in politics, however, it has only been clear since the end of last year with the Annual Tax Act 2022 that the surcharge will remain tax-free.

As a result, the tax office calculated too high taxes for many pensioners for the tax years 2021 and 2022, according to the Bundesverband Lohnsteuerhilfevereine (BVL). According to BVL Managing Director Erich Nöll, there have already been a number of cases in the advisory practice of the wage tax assistance associations for both years in which the tax deduction was set too high because the tax office did not distinguish between regular pension payments and tax-free basic pension surcharges.

The problem: Since the tax exemption was only decided at the end of last year, the pension insurance still sent the wrong data to the tax authorities. The correction should be done automatically. Anyone who has not yet submitted their tax return for 2022 can hope for a correct decision by pointing this out.
