UK Miner Sentenced for Smuggling £32,000 of Electricity

A 40-year-old man in the UK has been jailed for using £32,000 of smuggled electricity while mining cryptocurrencies.

Sanjay Singh smuggled electricity for mining, operating a total of more than 200 devices he installed at two locations in Leicestershire.

After authorities found that an industrial facility in the area was using higher than normal levels of energy and launched an investigation, Singh also started mining at a local nightclub.

Singh, who was found to have stolen 32,000 pounds (about 401,570 lira) of electricity, was sentenced to 13 months and 2 weeks in prison after confessing to his crime, according to the Leicester Mercury report.

Andrew Baxter of the Crown Prosecution Service said that what is illegal “bitcoin mining” He stated that Singh was sentenced to prison for using illegal electricity and continuing to do so even while under investigation.
