Turkey has left behind an important milestone in the field of solar energy. Solar energy installed capacity exceeded the 12 thousand megawatt (MW) level for the first time and reached 12 thousand 425 MW. At the same time, the share of renewable energy in electricity production has been over 51 percent for the last two months.

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar emphasized that renewable energy will be the key to Turkey’s full energy independence and stated that they aim to increase the installed power of 5 thousand MW every year until 2035.

Renewable energy has a critical role in meeting Turkey’s energy needs in a sustainable manner, as well as increasing energy independence and achieving the goals of combating climate change. The renewable energy structure, which was once based on hydraulic energy, has now shifted to sources such as solar and wind energy.

The solar energy installed power, which was 11 thousand 316 MW by the end of 2023, exceeded the 12 thousand MW limit and reached 12 thousand 425 MW in just two months. This means an increase equal to almost half of the increase recorded in 2023 only in the period until the end of February.

Additionally, the share of renewable energy in electricity generation was 51.63 percent and 51.03 percent in January and February, respectively. This shows the important contribution of renewable energy in electricity production.

As Minister Bayraktar stated, Turkey has reached a significant rate in electricity production by using renewable energy resources. It is taking firm steps towards its goal of increasing the share of renewable energy in production to 55 percent by 2035.

The Minister stated that they aim to increase the installed power of 5 thousand MW every year, including 3 thousand 500 MW annually in solar energy and 1 500 MW annually in wind energy, until 2035, and aim to reach a total of 60 thousand MW new installed power over the next 12 years. .
