The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has released its report on global arms exports for 2022. Covering the years 2018-2022, the report included the countries that made the most imports and exports globally. There are serious changes in Turkey’s arms export and import rates, especially in the 5-year period between 2017-2022. There were 25 countries in the export part of the report and 30 countries in the import part.

When we start with the export report, we see that the USA takes the first place. The US had a 30 percent market share between 2013 and 2017. In the intervening 5-year period, it increased its share by 14 percent and increased its position in the global market to 40 percent.

Turkey, which has achieved a decrease in the import rate compared to the increase in its export share, is on the way to reduce its foreign dependency on weapons. Turkey entered the list of top importing countries at the 19th place. Having 2.4 percent of global import rates between 2013 and 2017, Turkey has reduced this rate to 1.3 percent in the new period. This represents a 49 percent decrease between the two periods.

The countries from which Turkey imports the most were Italy, Spain and Russia, respectively. The content of imports with Italy consists of the T129 ATAK helicopter, the project of which the Italian company AgustaWestland and TAI carry out together, and the Meltem-III project, which is also carried out jointly by TAI and Leonardo, an Italian company. The Meltem III project includes the conversion of 6 ATR72-600 aircraft into Maritime Patrol Aircraft. The Spanish import is the TCG ANADOLU Amphibious Assault Ship, which we purchased from the manufacturer company Navantia.
