Istanbul Elections will take place in Turkey on May 14, but Turks abroad are already allowed to go to the polls – and have a say in whether President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is voted out of office or is allowed to rule for another five years. The Turkish diaspora, which is several million strong, is more important than ever. The Turkish opposition, which wants to replace President Erdogan, knows this too – and this year is making special efforts to help its fellow citizens abroad.
Since 2014, Turks living outside Turkey have also been allowed to vote in elections. According to the Turkish Elections Authority (YSK), a good three million people in 75 different countries around the world are eligible to vote, most of whom live in Europe, the USA and the Middle East. According to the Federal Statistical Office, almost half live in Germany. All persons who have a Turkish passport and are older than 18 years of age are eligible to vote.
