This is how expensive the new levy will be for gas customers

Dusseldorf Gas traders should be allowed to pass on their increased purchase prices to consumers from autumn. The first details from circles of the Federal Ministry of Economics became known on Thursday. The surcharge is expected to apply for a limited period from October 1, 2022 to April 1, 2024. It may take a little longer for the costs to reach the consumer, but the prices for companies and private households are increasing enormously.

The aim is to prevent individual suppliers such as Uniper from failing, which could result in a collapse in the energy supply. Uniper is one of the largest gas traders in Germany and supplies hundreds of companies and municipal utilities.

With the amendment to the Energy Security Act (EnSig) at the beginning of July, the federal government created many opportunities to prevent systemically important companies from going bankrupt.

But how does the pay-as-you-go system work in practice? How much more do customers have to pay who are already struggling with the increased gas prices? The most important questions and answers.
