Increasing evidence of Surovikin’s arrest

There are increasing indications that the Russian General Sergei Surovikin has been arrested. The English-language Russian newspaper Moscow Times, citing Defense Ministry sources, reported that the deputy commander-in-chief of the invading forces had been arrested. “Obviously he (Zurovikin) sided with Prigozhin during the uprising and they caught him,” the independent newspaper quoted its sources as saying, adding that the general’s current whereabouts are unknown.

Paul Krisai, Moscow bureau chief of Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, wrote on Twitter that sources told him that neither Surovikin’s family nor his bodyguards know where the deputy chief of staff has been since Sunday.

The “New York Times” reported on Tuesday that Surovikin is said to have known about the Wagner uprising. The Kremlin dismissed the reports as speculation. The Reuters news agency reported on Thursday night, citing US officials familiar with the matter, that Surovikin had sympathized with the mercenary group’s revolt.

Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, whose mercenaries had previously fought alongside the regular Russian army in Ukraine for months, escalated a long-simmering power struggle within the Russian military leadership last Saturday. The Wagner fighters first occupied the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don and then marched on towards Moscow. Their practically unhindered advance only stopped a good 200 kilometers from the Russian capital.
