The US looks to Ukraine – China’s chance?

Berlin It takes 22 minutes to walk between Kyiv and Taipei. At least that’s the case in the embassy district in Berlin-Mitte, where the Taipei representation is located on Gendarmenmarkt, Taiwan’s de facto embassy in Germany. There, Taiwan’s representative Jhy-Wey Shieh receives on the fifth floor.

There is one question he hears particularly often these days, says Shieh: Can Putin’s attack on Ukraine serve as a blueprint for China to invade his country?

He certainly sees this danger, says the ambassador. “Since the annexation of Crimea in 2014, of course, we’ve always looked to Ukraine.” Even then, Chinese politicians and the military said quietly that Crimea could serve as an example for China. “In addition, Ukraine is a UN member, we are not. That is why we are even more threatened.”
