Saying that he made a trip to the Titanic with Titan in July 2022, Mike Reiss shared that a fear of disaster was always on his mind during that experience. In fact, he shared the source of this fear in his mind with the details about the waiver signed before the trip:

“Before I got on the sub, I signed a long waiver detailing all the ways this trip could have killed me: drowning, electrocution, crushing – death was mentioned three times on the first page. Before I left, I kissed my wife goodbye, thinking I would never see her again.”

They got lost with Titan on their own trip too!

“During my entire 10-hour voyage on Titan, I was more focused and calm than I had ever felt before. I even fell asleep while descending, despite my excitement and fear. It takes two and a half hours to land on the ocean floor two and a half miles below, and the submarine is quiet, dark, and surprisingly comfortable. At home. I woke up thinking that I was in the middle of nowhere, and then I realized that I was in a steel tube 13,000 feet under the sea.

I quickly realized that we were in the midst of a crisis: we were lost on the ocean floor. Our compass was spinning erratically. The instructions we received from the surface crew monitoring the ship’s movement did not match what we saw. The Titanic, the largest ship of its time, was only 500 meters away, but we couldn’t find it in the dark.

Instantly, the five of us on board—a pilot, three scientists, and I, a man with no special skills or training—were a team. We studied the maps, inserted the data into the laptop, looked out the porthole for clues to our location. It was calm, focused, and it worked – it took us three hours, but we found the Titanic.

I’m pretty sure that was the mood of the five people on board on Titan’s last voyage. There would be no panic, tears, or recriminations on board—only the focus would be on the crisis at hand. And if all this has failed, I believe there is peace. The bottom is a womb-like environment; Diving is a zen experience.”
