Berlin The new headquarters of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) in Berlin-Mitte is 283 meters long, 148 meters wide and 30 meters high. 4000 employees are housed in the building in Berlin-Mitte. But although we only officially moved into 2019, the huge house is already too small.

In order to accommodate the many new secret service employees, the BND wants to expand, convert and build new. The expenditure could well exceed the previously known framework: the BND puts the costs for the new building at up to 1.7 billion euros. This is reported to the Handelsblatt by several people who are entrusted with the construction plans of the intelligence service, which are classified as secret.

The BND is by no means the only federal construction project. According to a list by the Federal Ministry of Finance, which is available to the Handelsblatt, the ministries are planning 101 construction projects for themselves and their subordinate authorities in the 2023 budget year alone.
