Streets are ablaze, smoke hangs over the city: Aerial photos from the Ukrainian Mariupol give the impression that not much is left of the 400,000-inhabitant port city. Mayor Vadym Boychenko reports rocket fire every 30 minutes. It is hard to imagine that just three weeks ago, people in this city were still living a reasonably normal life, going to work and children playing in the streets.

Most of them are still there, hiding in cellars and bunkers. Some even in their homes. As of Monday afternoon, several hundred civilians are said to have left the city besieged by Russian troops in cars, but the majority are still stranded, having been stuck for days without electricity or water, while aid convoys are prevented from crossing the city limits.

According to aid organizations, the situation in Mariupol is dramatic. According to the city administration, 2,200 people were killed, and mass graves are being dug for the bodies.
