Russia-based VK company has been serving as the owner of ICQ since 2010. In a message they published recently, they announced that ICQ was shutting down. With the announcement, nostalgic memories came alive for many of us. ICQ was first released by Mirabilis in 1996 and reached a wide user base in a short time.

However, over time it fell behind other messaging apps and was acquired by Digital Sky Technologies (now VK) in 2010. Although VK attempted to update ICQ to be similar to modern messaging applications, these efforts never restored ICQ to its former popularity.
ICQ served its users by assigning a number, unlike other messaging applications. It also had features such as sending messages to offline contacts and SMS messaging. “Uh oh!” ICQ, which is remembered by many people with its voice notification, became the symbol of the era with these unique features.
