Gemini update for Google Messages has started rolling out

Announced at Google’s I/O 2024 event, Gemini was integrated into the Google Messages application and made widely available to make users’ messaging experience more efficient.

Gemini appears as a new chat assistant in the Google Messages application. Users will see Gemini as the first contact when they want to start a new chat. After accepting some terms, users are directed to a standard messaging interface. Emoji and gallery options are available in this interface, but there is no option to send voice notes.

Gemini allows users to draft messages, brainstorm, plan events, and have fun conversations. With Gemini, which is specifically optimized for Google Messages to offer more concise responses, users will chat directly one-on-one, and these conversations cannot be added to other conversations.

Gemini can integrate with extensions such as Workspace (Gmail, etc.), YouTube and GoogleMaps. Users can leave like or dislike feedback, star the answers and forward them by long-pressing on an answer. Chats occur over RCS (i.e. internet connection required) but end-to-end encryption is not supported.
