“Success of German companies was borrowed and not earned”

The entrepreneur has scientifically examined the causes of crises in family businesses and explained why many of them fail.

Dusseldorf The Schaeffs are among the oldest entrepreneurial families in Germany. Unlike others, however, they have parted ways with their companies from time to time. They started in 1596 as a hammer mill in Franconia. Today, Alexander Schaeff’s holding includes seven companies, mainly specialists in automation and robotics.

Schaeff has focused primarily on medium-sized companies that are in crisis or need new impetus. In the current situation, he is receiving more offers to take over companies than in previous years. A subsidiary also advises in crisis situations.

But the 60-year-old also wanted to do scientific research into what causes companies to get into trouble. In the past two years, he has been writing a doctoral thesis at WHU in Vallendar. He talks to the Handelsblatt about his most important insights and the secret of success from 427 years of entrepreneurship.
