Frankfurt “Will there be a breakthrough in Alzheimer’s tomorrow?” asked the “Bild” newspaper last summer, when the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was about to make a decision on the drug Aduhelm. In fact, on June 7, 2021, the authority granted approval for the active ingredient developed by the US company Biogen, thereby approving the first new drug against dementia in almost two decades.

This caused a stir internationally and fueled the hope of many of the more than 30 million Alzheimer’s patients worldwide and their families. The US approval has also fueled the debates in the professional world: Can Aduhelm’s reduction of so-called amyloid deposits in the brain really stop Alzheimer’s disease and improve or at least stabilize the cognitive abilities of patients? According to many skeptics, this has not been proven to this day.
