Scholz dampens hopes for fighter jets

Munich Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has promised Ukraine further support, but again stressed that there will only be further qualitative steps in arms deliveries in close coordination with the allies.

“We will continue to maintain the balance between providing the best possible support for Ukraine and avoiding an unwanted escalation,” Scholz said on Friday when he appeared at the Munich Security Conference (MSC).

And he is “glad and grateful” that US President Joe Biden and many other allies see it the same way he does. After the supporter countries had pledged battle tanks, the hopes of the Ukrainians were ultimately focused on combat aircraft and long-range missiles.

However, the Allies are reluctant to comply with these requests because the Ukrainian armed forces could also attack Russian territory with these weapons. This, in turn, could serve as a pretext for Putin to further escalate the war – even to the point of using nuclear weapons.
