Berlin Germany’s energy bill rose to 58.7 billion euros in 2021 from January to November compared to the same period last year. This corresponds to an increase of 55 percent. The value of net imports of natural gas during this period was 23.1 billion euros, twice as much as from January to November 2020.
The figures are based on calculations by the energy expert Hans-Wilhelm Schiffer and were first published in the “Energy Information Service”. Schiffer is a member of the Studies Committee of the World Energy Council, London, and Chairman of the drafting group Energy for Germany of the World Energy Council in Germany.
The extreme price increases in December 2021 are not yet included in Schiffer’s calculations because all the necessary data is not yet available.
In 2021, Germany had to cover 71 percent of its energy needs from imports, Schiffer calculates. As in previous years, by far the most important supplier of energy raw materials was Russia: “For crude oil, natural gas and hard coal, Russia is number one,” writes Schiffer.
