London Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II is dead. Her son Charles is now king. This was announced by Buckingham Palace on Thursday.

It was only on Wednesday that the Queen had to cancel her participation in a virtual meeting of her Privy Council. The day before she had received first Boris Johnson, who handed in his resignation, and then Liz Truss to appoint her as the new Prime Minister. It was a full day, said a spokesman to justify the cancellation on Wednesday.

Numerous family members then traveled to their country estate at Balmoral Castle on Thursday, including their son Prince Charles (73) and their grandson Prince William (40). Crowds gathered at Buckingham Palace in London, at the Queen’s residence in Windsor and in front of Balmoral out of concern for Queen Elizabeth II.

Elizabeth II will be succeeded by her son Prince Charles. It is not yet clear what name he will take as king – it could be Charles III. or George VII. He was baptized Charles Philip Arthur George and could take any of those names.
